Marikina’s Cycling Community Grows as City Expands Bike Infrastructure

More Marikeños are turning to bicycles for daily mobility, with the number of cyclists recorded in Marikina City rising by 157 percent this year, according to the Marikina City Bikeways Office.

The latest Bike Count recorded 29,245 cyclists in 2026, up from 11,363 in 2025. This represents an increase of 17,882 cyclists in just one year.

The Bike Count is conducted to measure cycling activity across the city and gather data that can help guide improvements to Marikina's active mobility network.

The city also recorded 67,428 cyclists during a broader seven-day monitoring period, highlighting the continued use of bicycles as an alternative mode of transportation in the city.

Marikina Mayor Maan Teodoro said the figures indicate that the city's programs promoting cycling are gaining traction.

"Ang mga numerong ito ay positibong indikasyon na nagbubunga ang ating mga pagkilos at mga programa na nagsusulong ng mas ligtas at maayos na pagbibisikleta," Teodoro said.

She added that the local government plans to further strengthen programs and facilities designed to make cycling safer and more convenient for residents.

"Asahan na ng mga Marikeño na lalo pa nating pagtitibayin ang mga programa at pasilidad para sa mas ligtas at maayos na pagbibisikleta sa ating lungsod," she added.

As part of its efforts, the Marikina Bikeways Office regularly cleans and maintains the city's bike lanes. This includes removing leaves, moss, and other obstructions that could affect the safety and comfort of cyclists.

The city government is also developing the Marikina Active Transport Park in Barangay Marikina Heights. The facility will provide dedicated spaces for bicycles and BMX bikes, as well as skateboards, roller skates, rollerblades, and non-motorized scooters.

The active transport park is also planned to serve as an end-of-trip facility for cyclists. It will include restrooms, designated areas for stalls, and spaces for various community activities.

Meanwhile, the local government is installing bike racks in schools to provide organized and accessible parking for students who cycle to school.

With cycling activity continuing to grow, the latest Bike Count provides the city government with data that can help shape future investments in active mobility infrastructure and programs.

For Marikina, the increase also points to a growing demand for transportation facilities that accommodate cyclists alongside other road users.
